Using Distributive Property to "Simplify Expressions"
To use the Distributive Property
- Multiply each term on the inside of the parenthesis by the number on the
outside of the parenthesis.
Example A:
Adding Like Terms to "Simplify Expressions"
To Add Like Terms
- Like Terms are terms that have the same
variable to the same exponent. Combine
Like Terms by add their Coefficients* together.
Constants are added together.
*Note: The
Coefficient of a variable is the number in front of the
variable, if
there is no number in front of the variable, the coefficient is "1".
- When Subtracting an expression in a set of parenthesis,
Distribute the " - " sign to each
term in the parenthesis and then add.
In other
words, change the signs in the 2nd set of parenthesis...
