Using Distributive Property to "Simplify Expressions"

To use the Distributive Property

  1. Multiply each term on the inside of the parenthesis by the number on the outside of the parenthesis.

Example A:

Adding Like Terms  to "Simplify Expressions"

To Add Like Terms

  1. Like Terms are terms that have the same variable to the same exponent.  Combine Like Terms by add their Coefficients* together.
    Constants are added together.
     
    *Note: The Coefficient of a variable is the number in front of the variable, if there is no number in front of the variable, the coefficient is "1".
  2. When Subtracting an expression in a set of parenthesis,  Distribute the " - " sign to each term in the parenthesis and then add.
    In other words, change the signs in the 2nd set of parenthesis...
